Case Log — Practice-Based Learning System

Resilience Software develops, hosts, and supports the Practice-Based Learning System (Case Log) for the American College of Surgeons. We offer custom versions of this proven and successful application to other organizations. Using Resilience Software to implement a case log will dramatically reduce risks and costs in comparison to building it from scratch.

The purpose of a case log is to allow physicians to track their activities and see how their results compare to other users of the system. (The ACS also includes comparison to NSQIP benchmarks.)

Key Points

Key Points

Proven

In use since October 2005
The Case Log was formally released at the fall ACS Congress in San Francisco in October, 2005. Resilience has provided staff to teach users at each congress since the system was released.
The Case Log has constantly evolved since it was first released and can continue to be enhanced as desired.
Over a million cases recorded by over 3000 doctors
As of November 1, 2009 there were 1,115,089 cases entered by 3,408 surgeons.

Secure and private

A way for physicians to privately review their cases and outcomes
Case Log was carefully designed to ensure no information about an individual user or their patients is ever visible to other users or people who work for the sponsoring organization. Because only a physician can access their own information and Resilience Software hosts a secure dedicated server used only for this system, a user can confidently store sensitive information in the system for their personal review.
Secure and HIPAA compliant
Case Log includes the documentation required to support HIPAA. Each user must agree to a Business Associate Agreement and a Participation Agreement before they can use the system.

Comprehensive

Includes the full set of ICD and CPT® codes
The Case Log includes the ICD and CPT® codes and ways for users to quickly find the code they need through nicknames, hotlists, and intuitive searching based on their own cases. These codes are updated annually by Resilience and obsolete codes are flagged in the system.
28 data points can be captured
Case Log can capture 28 different data point for each case, from patient demographics, to comorbidities, to complications. These data points can be included in comparative reports for (anonymous) comparison to other Case Log users.

Convenient

Quick, multimodal entry and editing
As of November 2009 we support Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices and will support BlackBerry (Q4 2009), iPhone (Q1 2010), and Android (2010) in the future.
Log as little or as much as desired
The Case Log requires only a procedure date for a valid case. Users can decide if they want to log only the bare minimum data for for ABS recertification, or capture all 28 data points to maximize the value they can derive from Case Log's advanced reporting features.
Automates submission of practice data for board recertification
The ACS version of the Case Log allows General Surgeons to prepare and send a file of their experience by role and location to the American Board of Surgery for recertification. This process leverages the data already in the Case Log to automate what was once a tedious, manual process.
Import from other systems
The Case Log provides a way to import information from files that can be generated from other systems. This saves you time creating cases by electronically importing demographic, diagnosis, and procedure information from other systems, such as hospital computers or billing systems.
Available on multiple platforms
The Case Log is accessible through any web browser, but users can enter and edit cases on mobile devices as well. Using a Palm, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, or iPhone device, users can synchronize their cases to and from the server any time they have internet access on their device. The case data is encrypted on each device and can only be accessed using a password.

Costs

Please call us at 1 (866) 694-2323 extension 111 to request a proposal detailing all your costs.

Implementing a version of the Case Log for your organization will likely include the following costs:
  • License fee
  • Customization costs
  • Unlimited support on a fee-per-user basis; optional after the first year
  • Monthly hosting fees for the system on a dedicated server in a top tier co-location facility
  • Fees for ICD and CPT® codes.
We can provide a complete, tailored solution with minimal effort by your organization. After quick consultation with key users we would identify changes needed and implement a prototype for review and approval. Once activated, the software is available to all members of your organization and support is provided to each user as required.

It would be our pleasure to provide more details, do a web demonstration, or work with you to prepare a proposal. Please contact Kent Haden or 1-866-694-2323 ext 111.
